At the age of five I told my parents I was going to be an architect. Just a few years later I was helping my dad build furniture in the garage on weekends and after school.
Over the years these two passions grew on separate trajectories, occasionally crossing paths but never really connecting until I reached my fiftieth birthday. It was then I decided to bring them together.
I began simple mind studios in 2008 as a vehicle to pursue art, architecture and emerging passions freely as I transitioned to the next chapter of my career; an opportunity to match my skills and enthusiasms with likeminded clients and projects.
Prior to launching sms, I was with DTJ Design in Boulder, Colorado. As Director of Residential Architecture, I was actively involved in community design projects of various scales, uses and contexts across the U.S. During my 15+ years at DTJ, I found a voice within the profession as a speaker addressing housing and planning issues at national and regional conferences.
Before joining DTJ I was with Berkus Group Architects in Irvine, California where I began my career in 1980. Barry Berkus is highly regarded as an innovator in housing solutions, and it was in those influential, "career building" years I found my passion. When I left the Berkus Group I was Director of Design.
